Why choose a writing retreat? It’s all about what it feels like to unplug from daily routines, the demands and expectations, and letting your creative self be the focus of attention. Each day, tension releases from the body under the care and attention provided by retreat staff in an ocean-side setting. It’s also about coming together with others who have said yes to themselves; exploring within a circle of trust.
As a retreat leader, I mindfully choose locations that encourage creativity to flourish. Our retreat groups are limited to ten participants so that everyone gets individualized attention. A typical retreat day involves pre-breakfast meditation, post-breakfast group writing practice followed by unstructured afternoon hours. Everyone is free to create, explore, rest, or connect with fellow retreat participants. Throughout each day we are connecting more deeply with the stories we are longing to write, and the audiences we are meant to serve.
Participants are invited to arrive with a beginner’s mind. Inevitably, they are amazed at the results. Each person discovers that their words come more easily each day. Leaning into the support created within the group, individuals begin to see the beauty of what they have written. It is a new experience, being heard in this way, having words received and honored so deeply.
I believe that everyone has a deep well of expression residing inside that they can tap into, an unlimited and overflowing reservoir of creativity where love, laughter, pain, sorrow and love all reside. During a writing retreat, you are likely to re-discover playful self-expression. You may discover just how much your words matter.
Not only that, during our time together you learn how to build an ongoing practice, how to mindfully revise your words once you’ve loved the newborn pieces you’ve created. You discover the elements of strong writing, using an organic process that arises directly from the body. It’s a place beyond thought, beyond the rational mind. It’s where magic happens.
